strange growing affinity for John Denver Music
UPDATE--> I found and uploaded the picture I took of that glorious morning you can find it by clicking ---> here
When I was growing up, I listened to 70's rock. That was the cool thing back then. cause, it was the 70's.... odd that. Then disco came along, and along with that was the Daily disco Destruction on the rock radio stations. I wasn't much of an audiophile, though I had a pretty kick ass stereo. (that I had until about 5 years ago..) I wouldn't have been caught dead listening to country music, in fact, I'm not really into it now, i think most of it is filled with trite cliche's. But that's a post for another day.
I think where I connect with John Denver is in the mountains.
When I was on the AT, I developed a strong(er), appreciation? is that the right word? Longing? no, maybe too strong. I developed a desire to feel the awe that I felt when I woke up on a mountain top in Viriginia after slogging through the mud and rain the sunless day before. I got out of my sleeping bag, and I had a 360 degree view of mountains as far as I could see, and the fog below me blanketed the foothills all around. Only the mountain tops peeked through the mist. it was like over-looking a lake with sunlit islands sprinkled liberally. The rising sun was warm on my face, my wet shirt steamed in the sun's warmth and I shivered when the cool breeze brushed by. This was a bright and glorious morning. It was worth slogging through the extremely craptastic day before to witness it. It was, in a word, awesome. (and not in the gnarly kind of way...)
Sometimes when I catch the lyrics of his songs I get that sense of awe again. He was able to capture the feelings I had, and express them with an eloquence that I don't seem to posess. And that brings me around to the point of this post. Lately I've been seeking out some of his stuff, there are some really good ones on youtube I'll share with you here. I think think that I would like to spend some time in Colorado, Maybe toy with some ideas of moving there sometime in the future... i've never seen the Rockies except from over a plane wing. (cheap seats....) enjoy.
